CLAUDIA'S NOT SURE SHE WANTS TO FIND OUT WHO'S ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE.
Welcome to the discussion post for week two! Don't panic if you haven't finished Claudia and the Phantom Phonecalls yet - we're all in different time zones, so things will be a little bit staggered. The post doesn't have an expiry date on it, so just comment whenever you're ready.
This is the post to discuss your reading of Claudia and the Phantom Phonecalls.
What was your favourite part? What was your least favourite part? Any memorable quotes you'd like to share? What had you forgotten about since the last time this book was read?
There are no mandatory questions or points of discussion for this - anything you want to talk about in relation to this week's book, go ahead!
I was late reading this book this week - I put up the post and have just finished reading it now, haha. WHY HAVE I NOT READ THIS BOOK MORE OFTEN, THOUGH?
I don't know why, but I wasn't expecting to like it, only because I really couldn't remember much about it. I figured if it wasn't memorable, it wasn't good, but ahh, I loved it!
+ Claudia and Janine moments, and Janine hiding candy in her room! + MIMI ♥ EVERYTHING MIMI SAYS. ♥ + Alan Gray! (I love Alan Gray and I ship him with everyone. He's pretty adorable in this, yesssss.) + Mary Anne's Sure-fire Burglar Alarms. + Kristy "one false move and I'll punch your lights out" Thomas (I literally laughed out loud at this). + The adorableness of Jamie Newton wearing the cop's hat. + Also, Roger Newton! I love finding out the first names of BSC parents.
I loved this book. I loved that the possible fight between Kristy and Claudia blew out before it had even started, I loved the Kishi family moments with Claudia, Mimi and Janine, and I loved the "there's a dance on and omg BOYS" stuff. ♥
Ma's burglar alarms are one thing that has stuck with me all these years. Also who can forget the red ribbon code! I also loved finding out it's Kirsten Dunst on the cover.
When I was about that age, I realized the local prefix spelled 'DOG'. Turns out 'DOG-BUTT' belonged to a local salon and we would call/hang up on them endlessly.
Definitely the Mimi + Claud and Janine + Claud moments. I really like Claudia's voice in this book, its very witty and snappy. I like that she's so shy around Trevor (very realistic, LOL). I like that Claudia is smart but just doesn't apply herself at school WAY MORE than I like the Claudia who can barely spell or reason logically. Bleh.
But JANINE ♥ and MIMI ♥ ♥ I wish we'd learned more about Mimi's heritage and time in Japan. What made her come to the US, I wonder?
And I love that Janine was trying so hard to be a good sister to Claudia, even if Claud brushed her off for the most part. It didn't discourage Janine.
What was your least favourite part?
Mary Anne's burglar alarms, actually - I can't help but cringe when I read that chapter, even now. The secondhand embarrassment is too much, LOL!
Any memorable quotes you'd like to share?
I shrugged. “Do you think it could be Sam goof-calling?” Kristy’s brother had quite a reputation. And he liked to give the Baby-sitters Club a hard time every now and then.
“It’s possible,” said Kristy thoughtfully. “He’s pretty interested in this Phantom business, but it’s not like Sam to call and not say anything. He kind of likes to leave his mark, if you know what I mean. It’d be more like him to get on the phone and say in a really spooky voice, ‘Woooo, Kristeee. Phantom here. Woooo, you better hide your plastic ring and your charm necklace, because I’m on my way over. …’ ”
and
“Son,” said Officer Stanton in a more kindly voice, “what did you want to ask her?”
Alan mumbled something that nobody could understand.
“Louder!” shouted Rob from the kitchen.
“Finish your sandwich!” I yelled back.
LOL!!
What had you forgotten about since the last time this book was read?
Why Kristy so readily accepted Alan's invitation to the Halloween Hop, and how nervous/excited she was to be going to her ~very first dance~. I really like "girly" Kristy, I haveta say!
- Stacey and Charlotte watching the scary movie, including Stacey asking about cable and Charlotte explaining they didn't have it yet. If Stacey is trying to tune in UHF stations, I can imagine her fiddling with knobs and bunny-ears.
- Kristy being described as small for her age. Somewhere along the line I must have forgotten that completely.
- Mary Ann's father doesn't seem too ridiculously strict in hindsight because he's about on par with some of the stuff my friends' parents were enforcing.

I know what you mean. This book doesn't stick out in my mind, either, but the reread was a pleasant surprise, to say the least! ♥

ME TOO. She is much more realistic in these early books. It's definitely taken too far as the books progress. :/

And Mary Anne's burglar alarms are embarrassing, even more so because I think I emulated her when I first read the book.
