FOUR FRIENDS AND BABY-SITTING - WHAT COULD BE MORE FUN?
Welcome to week one of our BSC read-through! We're kicking things off with BSC book #1, Kristy's Great Idea.
It's actually a brilliant time to start a read-through, as August 2013 marks the 27th anniversary of this very book! Kristy's Great Idea was first published in August 1986.
You can read entirely at your own pace - there won't be any check in or anything through the week, but at some point next weekend I will put up a discussion post. It's not mandatory to participate in the discussion posts - they're just a place for us to squee/snark/love/laugh about things in the book we've just read.
You don't need a Dreamwidth account to participate! If you want to comment on anything, DW supports OpenID, or you can comment without signing in at all as an "anonymous" user. Just keep an eye on the MAIN PAGE of stoneybrook and you'll be able to keep up with our latest posts.

I just picked up my copy from the library about an hour ago!
As for this post, feel free to share a few memories you have of Kristy's Great Idea. Have you read this book before? How long has it been since you read it? What do you remember about it?
It's been more than twenty years so I... really don't remember any particulars.
I'm fairly sure I would have been ~8 years old when I started reading the series and being 13 seemed really far away. And of course, when I got to be 12~13 and I'd get left alone with even one ~7yo, I'd be super-paranoid. I'm sure for people with younger siblings (I'm an only child) like some of the cast, baby-sitting for even babies at 13 would be do-able, but it seemed unrealistic to me once I got to that age. ^^;;
I completely agree. I'm a teacher now so parents have to trust me with their kids whether they want to or not but I would never have been given children to supervise when I was thirteen and not even at sixteen. I was very responsible and extremely serious but Stoneybrook is the textbook definition of the ideal close-knit small town where people don't lock their door to go to the post office which has always seemed unrealistic to me. The bright side of that is that I've been really jealous of the girls' environment, I wish I'd grown up in such a place!
I certainly can't imagine me at ~13 dealing with a family like the Pike's or something... (watching ~7yo would be like when I'd stay with a friend for the weekend and she had dance lessons or something - it was an hour or so tops)
I remember having some pretty amazing expectations for babysitting as a teenager, except I never actually got to do it. I lived in a rural area and by the time I was driving, it made far more sense just to get a part-time job.
I used to babysit when I was 14 - we moved from where I grew up to a bigger town, and then when I was 15 moved back again. My hometown was really too small to babysit anyone - everyone went to the same school; grades prep to three were in the same classroom and so were grades four to six. So trying to claim authority over anyone was a bit useless really, haha. Our town just had one big mob of kids moving around looking after one another all the time.
It always seemed so weird to me that a 10-year-old would listen to a 13-year-old the same way they would listen to a parent. But it was never strange enough that it ruined my enjoyment of the books ♥ ;p
