Vegetable blouse! Poodle hair clip! I think this is one of our first truly random Claudia outfits and I love it.

Wow, we're only in October! Time is starting to slow as the time warp sets in, I guess.

I do believe this is the first mention of Cokie Mason!

Interesting that she acknowledges some feelings are hurt by the club choosing each other over their old friends.

I kind of love Mary Anne reading about Beth's death to feel better.

Jackie's robot costume sounds pretty awesome, tbh.

I appreciate that the scary letter package includes the dash in baby-sitters club.

I love when the BSC goes into mystery-solving mode!

I want a dusty, spooky library, too, Mary Anne!

I love how all the normal mishaps and illnesses, even Jamie's Halloween fears are all BAD LUCK. Jackie wrecked stuff! Claud failed a spelling test! It must be a curse!

Yeah, a bird in the house is pretty terrifying.

Oh my god, 18 sandwiches. I am never having 8 kids.

Old Man Hickory!

I love how consistent they are with the details of who lives where—Kristy arrives because she's driven, Mary Anne still lives across the street, Jessi is nearby, Dawn and Mal came over together.

I love everyone planning how they're going to sneak out! It's all tailored to everyone's personalities.

LOL at Charlie driving them to the graveyard. Like he's got nothing better to do. (And it kills me that Kristy ASSUMES he will.)

More continuity! David Michael remembers going to Morbidda D's house for lemonade!

I absolutely believe Mrs. Porter knows about and plays up the witch thing. There's no way this isn't all her.

I can't believe Mary Anne is a Stephen King fan! I feel like they would upset her too much.

Charlie just kind of goes along with it. They must be paying him the big bucks.

Charlie DIRECTING LOGAN TO THE GRAVE OMG. Now I want to see Charlie and Logan bonding over the insane women in their lives. Or just Charlie and Logan bonding, period.

Ha! Kristy's mind is completely blown at the idea that Cokie and Grace are the bad luck.

I love this ending, how they accomplished this crazy scheme and get to feel good about themselves afterward! This is my favorite type of BSC book.

"Nobody, but nobody" I don't recognize this way of emphasis. Is it an east coast thing?

"This is a sort of diary that Kristy makes us keep, which no one likes writing in..." I didn't remember this.

"Claudia used to have a crush on Austin. Bigger than the one Trevor had had on her.)" - when? They dance in book 6, then "a few times" leading up to book 10, and some more there. When's the crush?

Yessss, this book. SO MUCH FUN. The past two books have such “grown-up” and serious topics in them that it’s great to have this one go all batshit with the Halloween curses and the paranoia.

First things first:
I opened the book to the scene where Beth dies. And that is how nine-year-old me got totally spoiled for Little Women!

+“Too late,” Kristy announced as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. “You can abandon us tomorrow, Logan.”
Logan grinned.

I always really liked their relationship. I like that outside of the respective relationships with Mary Anne, they’re comfortably jokey with each other and bond a lot over sports (sometimes to the point where even Mary Anne feels excluded). Idk, it’s just super cute that Kristy feels comfortable teasing her
BFF’s boyfriend, and vice versa.

+it’s been mentioned before that Claudia loves to read crime newspapers and so, it seems, does Mary Anne. I guess the BSC LOVING mysteries didn’t just come out of the blue to kick-start the Mystery series.

+wait, Jessi has braces?

+ I’ve never seen the President of the United States sitting in a director’s chair, wearing a visor. Do it for the BSC, Obama!

+ Oh Jackie and how he just shrugs it off when his robot falls apart. You know, he should get more credit for being so chill over his Walking Disaster tendencies. Also…Archie takes up tumbling? Who gives a four y.o. tumbling lessons?

+my first thought was that Tigger had been kittennapped *clears throat* It’s coming…

+”You’re afraid!” “You’re right!” Boy, judging from her drill sergeant behavior in this book, Kristy is on FIRE when she’s afraid. I mean they actually looked up SPELLS, I can’t. Scrapings from the underside of a sea snake! And Kristy was trying to scold them into being SERIOUS about it! And it WORKS – “we were more afraid of Kristy” lmao. I also have to laugh at Mary Anne semi-trolling Kristy with the spells later.

Something that kinda bothers me:
What do we do first? Claudia whispered as soon as we were inside. Umm, am I missing something here? Where’s Mrs. Kishi?

+ Georgie the Casper Expy! Only a shy, introverted kid like Jamie would think of overcoming his anxiety and entering a contest just so a fictional character can win.

+ Yeah, I am giggling at how all the typical disastrous babysitting happenings are ~totes bad luck. I’d freak the heck out over a bird in the house though, and bleggh, the tooth. Can’t stand to see loose teeth.

btw, I want the Daddy Stew backstory so bad.

+ Claudia was afraid it could mean the end of junk food. THE HORROR. I like how they put this on par with death and destruction.
I like how Mary Anne wants to gloat at Grace’s jealousy of Logan. :D

+ I wasn’t sure whether Kristy would have thought it was funny that I saluted her. Lmao, I just love that a goofier/snarkier side of Mary Anne’s friendship with Kristy is coming out in this. Like, there’s the semi-trolling earlier, but also how she tries to maneuver Kristy into canceling the whole sneak-out event.

+ omg Richard actually says the words “ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties.”

+ yeah, the last two chapters were just…pre-teen girl id-city to me back then. Scaring the crap out of the bullies by giving them a dose of their own medicine! Your cute boyfriend hightailing it to the graveyard just in time to see your victory! Laughing and giggling it out with your friends at a fun mansion sleepover!

+ I love Kristy defusing the tension at the very end by suggesting another ~spell. Get Boo-Boo, good Lord.
