Dawn’s family stuff
As a kid, Jack Schafer always struck me as really flaky (he wasn’t one of my favorite BSC parents), so I was amused to see Dawn label him as turning into Disneyland Daddy.
Jeff seems pretty well-adjusted and happy in this book. And hey, Jeff + triplets funtimes! I guess he doesn’t get troublesome until school starts. Well, he gets a bit cranky here re: the ghost, but that’s about it. Dawn-Jeff is one of my favorite BSC sibling relationships and I’m going to miss their Connecticut latchkey kid adventures, even though it was only for a short time.
Is Jeff a strict vegetarian? I seem to remember him being the ‘rebel’ of the Schafers when it comes to vegetarianism but idk. Maybe I’m just thinking of Island Adventure and the fish (which they had no choice but to eat).
He grabbed me at the waist, and followed me out of my room and into Mom’s. We looked like two little kids playing choo-choo train.
I love this! One of my brothers and me have the exact same age gap as them, and we would totally do this during blackouts.
As for Sharon, were Granny and Pop-Pop trying to set her up with non-Richard men? Tsk. I gotta give her kudos for having more ghost story cred than her kids, pointing out that 'proper' ghosts float through walls. :)
Nice to have official confirmation that Dawn and Claudia do swap books occasionally.
Mary Anne showing Myriah their ‘secret window’ (that used to be Kristy’s) is so bittersweet! I get MA’s resentment at first.
“No. I’m afraid of all the things I can’t see that the dark is hiding.”
I know this probably wasn’t intentional, but all I could think about was
Mary Anne and the Secret in the Attic
where she learns about her maternal grandparents.
By far my favorite thing about this book is how Stacey and Mary Anne walk out of ghost stories and scheme and laugh hysterically together. <3 They have this new rapport now thanks to their summer experience and it is lovely. Stacey in particular has way too much fun sneaking around in this book, and she totes deserves it after all the Sea City heartbreak.
I have to laugh that Kristy and Claudia come prepared with junk food to Dawn’s sleepover!
James Anderson Newton
– omg, Claudia full-names him! Like a MOM would! <3 And I like how we never do learn exactly how Jamie goes to sleep. :D
and then remembered that the Pike kids are allowed to eat whatever they want (within reason).
It’s very sweet of Dee to remember Dawn’s traumatic experience with the Barrets when they’re talking about Nicky. Poor, poor Nicky.
Yeah, I really don’t know how I could sleep, if something like
were in my house and leading to the outside. That said, I also used to knock around my old house’s walls to listen for hollow sounds, and I blame it on BSC (and Bobbsey Twins!) books.
And finally, man, I had SUCH a thing for the Old Stoneybrooke subplots! I love how they all connect too, like this one eventually does with Old Man Hickory and the mystery diary.
